2. Odds and Ends
- Allied Waste, the garbage pick up service for most of San Mateo County, provides curbside recycling of batteries and cell phones. All you have to do is put your used phone or batteries in a plastic bag and leave it on top of your recycling bins for regular curbside pickup. If you live in another county, visit www.earth911.org, enter your zip code and you can find sites that will accept spent disposable batteries and all kinds of other things.
- The biggest tip I got from reading David Allen’s “Getting Things Done” was how to deal with procrastination. He believes that people procrastinate on projects because they haven’t spent time thinking. Yup, thinking! If you just spend a few moments analyzing what you need to do first on a project, you break the logjam. For example, if you put “replace tires on car” on your “to do” list, you might not take action because it’s too big/complicated an item for your list and you don’t know how to begin. What you might need to do first is “call three places to get pricing and wait time for the job”. Then, brainstorm all the other steps (i.e. “schedule time off work with boss”, “save money to pay for tires”, “take something to read while the work is being done”, etc.) and put them in order. My life is much less stressed and I have gotten much more done since I started asking myself: “What do I need to do first to make this happen?”
- I am amazed how many places will give you a discount if you have an AAA card. My two favorites are Fresh Choice and the UPS store. Visit AAA.com for other discounts.
- www.72hours.org is a great site for disaster preparedness. I really like their “Go bag” idea---a small bag for each family member to grab in case of a fire or quake.
- If you are tired of receiving mailed solicitations from credit card companies, you can opt out at(888) 5-OPTOUT (567-8688).
